Famellos chides PASOK over alleged rapprochement with ND

The newly elected leader of SYRIZA offered an indication of the leftist party’s tactics going forward on Saturday, stating that society “does not want consensus politics or a tango for two.”

Sokratis Famellos’ comments, made during a visit to the party’s regional committee offices in Achaia in the western Peloponnese, are seen as an apparent dig at PASOK over its rumored rapprochement with New Democracy following a meeting between the leaders of the two parties on December 4.

It is also seen as an indication that SYRIZA is, so far at least, ruling out the possibility of joining forces with PASOK, which recently found itself in the role of main opposition after SYRIZA’s breakup. He said SYRIZA is planning a nationwide campaign to “become bigger and stronger, and to constitute a pillar of a progressive counteroffensive.”

“We know that society doesn’t just want to vote for a good opposition in the next elections; it wants to vote for a good, progressive government,” said Famellos.
